Hyundai Nano Garden

Great things are coming from Hyundai Engineering & Construction in Korea.  There has been a lot of buzz about their Nano Garden, designed in collaboration with Gromo.

This unit just won the Silver award at the Fast Company 2010 Idea Awards. Nano Garden is a vegetable garden for the apartment kitchen, using hydroponics, so users don’t need to worry about pesticides or fertilizers. Instead of the sunlight, Nano Garden has lighting which promotes the growth of plants. The amount of light, water and nutrient supply is also controllable, so users can decide the growth speed. It lets users know when to provide water or nutrients to the plants, and Nano Garden functions as a natural air purifier, eliminating unpleasant smells.

I don’t believe this is available in the States yet, but I will keep you posted.

This isn’t the only area Hyundai E&C is involved in.  They are forerunners in renewable energy, including nuclear power, desalination, wind, hydro, tidal, bio-energy, and solar power.

They are developing residential units that are zero-energy and support the living environment–people, plants, animals.  Very cool.

Included in these buildings, of course, are new construction methods and materials.

  • CO2 reducing construction materials
  • Ultra-high strength / Low heat / Fire resistance concrete
  • High durability / Blast resistance nano materials
  • Thin polymer overlay / Cold mix asphalt pavement
  • High performance / High durability construction materials

I will be  researching the companies changing our lives.   Please comment as you run across them and let me know!
